Pet Friendly Turf vs. Engineered Pet Turf
First, let’s talk about the difference between “pet friendly” turf and engineered pet turf. Most domestic made artificial turf is pet friendly, meaning it is lead free and toxin free, but you should still request certification from the manufacturer of the artificial turf product. Ask for a product data sheet and the testing information. More about that later.
The problem is, large, active dogs and “pet friendly” turf are not the best match. If you are using a synthetic grass product with a long pile (grass blade height), the larger dogs will get their teeth into it and pull. Then there’s the problem of large dogs pooping on tall grass. If you’ve ever had to clean large dog poop in tall grass, you know what I’m talking about. If not, count yourself lucky!
Some pet friendly turf is acceptable for use with small dogs if it has a low pile (blade height, remember) and a permeable backing. A permeable backing means the backing of the artificial grass will allow more fluids to drain through at a faster rate than normal artificial grass. Typical synthetic turf with a standard black backing will have a drainage rate of 30+ inches of rain per hour per square yard. Engineered pet turf will have a drain rate of 60+ inches of rain per hour per square yard. And the few permeable standard synthetic turfs will also have more than double the drain rate of non-permeable backing turf.
The idea is to get the dog urine down into the base and into the ground. Non-permeable backing will absorb and hold more of the urine, resulting in more odor.
Tiger Turf’s engineered pet turf has a 1” pile which doesn’t allow large dogs to grab at the blades. It is also a heck of a lot easier to clean messes on a 1” pile turf than a 1 ¾” pile turf. As mentioned, engineered pet turf also has a permeable backing with a drain rate of 60+ inches of rain per hour per square yard.
If you have medium to large or multiple small or medium size dogs, Tiger Turf’s Engineered pet turf is the best choice. If you have one or two small dogs, Tiger Turf’s Sierra Light Clear Permeable or Multi-Purpose Playground Turf are great choices.

No Harmful Toxins or Chemicals
Lawn maintenance products introduce many harmful toxins into your home, including fertilizers and pesticides. Your pets walk and roll on the lawn and bring those harmful chemicals into your house. Your family also treks those toxins into your home, spreading them into bedding and couches.
According to multiple studies, 70% of cancer in dogs is more than likely caused by these chemicals and toxins. Pet turf gives your family peace of mind that you have a safe yard to romp and play.
Virtually No Maintenance
You will find that cleaning the dog messes will most likely be easier than cleaning the messes on natural sod. Pick up the excrement and hose the urine areas every so often. Keep some Simple Green Outside Odor Eliminator handy for those problem spots (see maintenance here).
Allergy Free
Allergies can be a problem not only for humans but for pets as well. Tiger Turf Engineered Pet Turf is made from hypoallergenic material. Pollen, fur, and dirt do not get trapped in our pet turf in the same amount as natural sod. This means your pets and children will not be tracking pollens into the house, couches, bedding, and rugs. Artificial Pet turf decreases the diseases caused by allergies.
Always Green Year Round
No more brown spots; no more dead grass! Our superior synthetic pet turf will maintain its color year round so your yard will always look as green as the day it was installed.
No More Mud
One pet equals four mud tracks into the house, or four paws to wipe off on rainy days. That does not include the kids! Artificial pet turf eliminates mud from being tracked into the house and makes rainy days a heck of a lot easier to let your pets outside to do their business.
Budget friendly
No more gardener bills, no more watering, no lawn care chemicals or fertilizers to buy. And no more water fines! Your new pet turf will pay for itself in a few short years.
Infill
The infill used for artificial pet grass is a very important part of the installation. Your standard landscape artificial turf will usually have a washed silica sand infill. For synthetic pet turf, two specialty products are used. Zeolite is an odor control product that is installed between the base and the turf and then mixed with Envirofill, and power brushed into the top of the turf. Envirofill is an antimicrobial infill, so the mixture of Zeolite and Envirofill gives your pet turf the optimum advantage to decrease odors.
Too many non-professional installers use the cheapest turf they can find, install Zeolite and Envirofill, and call it pet turf.
A quick note about cheap turf; stay away from imported turf. They will give you a 15 year guarantee on the product, but the product won’t last. Usually, the overseas factory or the installer goes out of business before the warranty expires. In our experience, the imported turf used for pets has a life of
